Of the many aspects of Indian culture, one of the most famous and intriguing ones is
Kundali Matching. Though everyone has been acquainted with it at least once in
their life, most do not know and understand the process. Kundali Matching is not
something that has originated in recent times; it has been there for a long time.
The Puranas and other holy documents have certain instances in them where the
importance of the process has been constantly given credit. In the Hindu Indian
culture, Kundali Matching is the process of checking compatibility between the
probable couple. This is mainly done to ensure that they do not undergo too many
difficult phases in their life. Similar to the western method of matching zodiac signs
and establishing the level of compatibility between them, the process has its
specialties. The main aspect of this process is to avoid the ill effects of planetary
alignments on the couple. This is expressed intricately through a janam kundali,
which is usually drawn at birth. The details of the child when born such as the date,
time and place of birth along with their name are used to draw the janam kundali.
The same is used at a later stage during the marriage.
The history of kundali
The history of Vedic astrology, which is the mother to many such customs is dated
around 5000 years ago. The hymns and the details of the Vedas were passed on
from one generation to the other. The rishis or sages and saints as we know them today
were ardent devotees who were rooted in their dedication. It is believed that these
Vedas were not human creations but the prayers that God whispered to the saints
who then passed on to other saints. The knowledge passing took a new turn when
Vyasa Maharshi decided to get the hymns in Vedas to a written form. They were
divided into four Vedas namely Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharvana
Veda. In these Vedas, the mention of Janam Kundali is clearly evident. The
guardians or saints who were teachers too used to obtain the details of the child. The
details, presented in the methods of those times were used to obtain the janam
kundali. When the children reached marriageable age, the Kundali Matching was
done to select the suitable partners. History speaks of Gautama Buddha, previously
known as Siddhartha that his horoscope mentioned possibilities of him becoming a
great emperor or a saint. He later evolved to be a great saint under whom Buddhism
had begun.
The process of Kundali
While the process itself has a great history to speak of, modern times have
reduced its use. Presently the increasing number of marriages without Kundali
Matching is a concern. Though many people do not believe it, the side effects would
be clearly visible under unexpected circumstances. Nevertheless, understanding the
process of Kundali Matching would be important to learn its importance. In Kundali
Matching the details of birth gives rise to a natal chart of the person. These natal
charts are of utmost importance. Many people get their natal charts done at the time
of birth. Though it is preferable, they can be drawn again at the time of marriage.
The bride and groom are matched through a total of 36 points, in which they must
obtain at least 18 points. The categories under which this matching occurs can be
classified into eight different ones. The categories are Varna, Vasya, Tara, Yoni,
Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi. Varna speaks of the social division, Vasya is the
compatibility check of support to each other while tara is about the health and well
being of the couple. Yoni speaks about the possibility of children and disturbances in
it while Maitri speaks about the harmony and ease with which the couple supports
each other. Gana speaks of the person’s temper and control, Bhakoot is for the
prosperity of the couple and Nadi is the verification of possible disabilities in children.
Each of them has an important and is thus considered primary for marriage. In
Kundali Matching, the point of the couple between 18 to 24 are considered normal. Those
between 24 and 32 are considered compatible while 32-36 are revered as the best
possible couple.
There are many other aspects on which the life of a couple depends, but the
astrological alignments too are influential. It is necessary to understand this
importance and take steps in that manner.
